"I will quit if I cannot serve the people of Narayanganj."
Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy has threatened to resign if the administration does not cooperate with her in resolving the problems of the city.
“The administration officers are not cooperating with the city corporation. I will quit if I cannot serve the people of Narayanganj. But before that, I will hold a press conference and reveal everything about all of them. Then, I will submit my resignation to the prime minister,” Ivy said after a meeting at the Nagar Bhaban on Monday.
Officials from the district administration, police, Wasa, BRTA and public works department attended the meeting organised by the NCC.
Various problems of the city, including traffic congestion and eviction of hawkers were discussed in the meeting.
Ivy said: “Political feuds and competition is common in all the districts. Officials of the administration are working despite all of these problems. But, they cannot do anything when they come to Narayanganj.
“Strong political influence prevails in the district but the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police can obviously do anything if they wish.”
In the meeting, the city corporation councilors pointed out several problems including drug peddling, traffic jam and illegal establishments.
Additional District Magistrate Sarowar Hossain said that mobile courts led by magistrates had been carried out to resolve the traffic-related issues.
He also said they would take stern action against drug peddlers upon specific information.
Mentioning that the Narcotics Control Department is designated for restricting drugs trade, ASP Mostafizur Rahman said police had filed 150 cases under the Narcotics Control Act and arrested 500 drug addicts and peddlers over the last one year.
